Alan Heffernan lit up the predict your time event last Wednesday night when he beat Nigel Carroll's course record. Alan blasted around the 24km course in 38 min 12 seconds. On a warm but calm evening, Alan found his grove early and put in a superb ride. Eleanor Fennessy was the fastest lady on the night, also making light work of the testing course. Barry Looney and Simon Martin both came within 12 seconds of their predicted time, so they shared the spoils. A detailed review of proceedings was undertaken in the Hut Bar afterwards. The next few weeks should be interesting, as there is no doubt the likes of Nigel Carroll, Emmet Fennell, Kevin Fennessy, Brendan Coakley, and Jimmy Condon will have a crack off Alan's record.
Brendan Coakley put in another huge performance in the recent De Ronde Classic. The popular road race took place in Minane Bridge in what are best described as melting conditions.
Saturday saw large numbers on the road. The 6.30am start helped to avoid the hottest weather. It was great to have Dave Revins back in the fold, following his successful trip to Australia as physical therapist to the Irish rugby team. Tom O'Sullivan led the first group, ably assisted by his own personnel mechanic, Noel Linnane of the BikeFix. Tom was sporting a new set of Mavic wheels and Shimano groupset on his trusty BMC. Rumours of a lotto win rippled through the group. When Tom treated the group to an ice cream, the rumour mill went into overdrive. Donal Scannell led the second group. The ride headed east for Youghal and turned for Clashmore and Villerstown. After a stop for refreshments in Cappoquin, the group pedaled along the scenic Blackwater Valley and on to Watergrasshill.
Sunday saw a big turn out also. The group headed for the Waterford seaside village of Ardmore. The cycle was calm until Brian Atkinson made a bold bid for glory on the Youghal bypass. Brian left some noted climbers in his wake as he powered to the top of the climb. We are all looking forward to seeing resplendent Brian in his polka dot jersey next weekend. Chapeau also to Martin Buckley who chased down and caught the group after a delayed start. After coffee in Ardmore, there was a quick and enjoyable wind assisted return home.
Wednesday evening cycles continue departing Watergrasshill at 7pm. All are welcome. There will also be a club cycle on Thursday evenings for the next few weeks. Club cycles will continue on Saturday and Sundays. Details will be posted on club Facebook page. New members are always welcome. On Sunday mornings, all levels of cyclists are catered for, with the group split into 3 levels. New members are very welcome to turn up and cycle provided they have a racing bike, a helmet, and are over 18.
