A large group from the club headed to Glengarriff last Saturday for the popular Rebel Tour. The weather gods did not look favourably on the cyclists as persistent rain and strong winds were the order of the day. The day got off to a bad start for Simon Martin. Simon's hair got wet before the start, which meant he could not cycle. Simon who prides himself on being best turned out on all cycles, was not willing to risk his reputation as the club's most dapper cyclist. Sean O'Flynn was showing off his ripped six pack in his new see through cycling gear. Rumours that he had to be asked by stewards to out on a jacket re being investigated at the moment. The cycle will go down as one of the toughest due to the weather and the mountainous route. It was a great achievement by Jimmy Condon, Peter Power, John Heaphy, and Aidan O'Brien to complete the 160km route.
On the home front, Brian Atkinson, Dermot Brosnan, Trevor Healy and, Alan Heffernan braved the elements for an 80km spin taking in Midleton, Dungourney, Tallow, Conna, before returning to the village. Sunday saw Brendan Coakley, Barry Looney, Jerry Fitzgerald, and Alec Smith head for Glanworth via Cappagh Cross. History was made on Sunday afternoon when Bernard Burke took the club Strava record for the segment between Clogheen and Newcastle. His superb ride was not without controversy, with Alan Heffernan suggesting that mechanical doping was involved.
Wednesday evening cycles continue departing Watergrasshill at 7pm. All are welcome. Club cycles will continue on Saturday and Sundays. Details will be posted on club Facebook page. New members are always welcome. On Sunday mornings at 9am, all levels of cyclists are catered for, with the group split into 3 levels. New members are very welcome to turn up and cycle provided they have a racing bike, a helmet, and are over 18.
